National Route 2 bypass project clears preliminary feasibility review
A planned bypass road project designed to ease traffic congestion on National Route 2, which runs through the heart of Suncheon, has cleared a preliminary feasibility review by the Ministry of Planning and Budget.
According to Suncheon city, the project will build a 4.6-kilometer road connecting Sangsa-myeon to Yondong Intersection in Dosa-dong, the Suncheon slaughterhouse in Hongnae-dong, Haeryong-myeon and Haeryong IC, at a total cost of 167.2 billion won ($121 million).
With the preliminary feasibility review cleared, the project will be formally included in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Sixth Five-Year National and Local Road Plan (2026–2030), giving it the momentum needed to move into full development.
"Once the bypass is completed, it will deliver significant economic and social benefits — easing traffic distribution in the city center, improving traffic flow, restoring the national road network's function and meeting future transportation demand driven by urban growth in the southern-central region," Suncheon Mayor Son Hun-mo said.
