Gangseo-gu District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon attended the graduation ceremony of Learnway School, a community tutoring program run jointly by Korea Airports Corporation and the humanitarian organization Kia Daecheck, on Wednesday.
About 50 people attended the event, including Jin, Korea Airports Corporation acting President Park Jae-hee, Kia Daecheck Chairman Choi Chang-nam, and students who participated in the program.
In his remarks, Jin thanked both organizations and the mentor and mentee students who took part. "I am grateful to the two institutions that provided valuable learning opportunities to local students this year, as they did last year, and to all the mentors and mentees who joined the program," he said.
He added that the program had given students more than academic instruction. "Through Learnway School, students did not simply study — they spent meaningful time nurturing their dreams and thinking about their futures," Jin said. "I hope the special bond between mentors and mentees continues beyond today's ceremony and grows into an even deeper relationship."
Learnway School is a one-on-one tutoring program for students from low-income households in communities near airports, including Gangseo-gu, Yangcheon-gu, Mokpo and Muan-gun.
In Seoul, 20 university student mentors and 20 middle school student mentees took part over three months beginning in June, receiving not only academic tutoring but also motivational support and career guidance.
A satisfaction survey conducted after the program found that 43 percent of participating students reported tangible academic gains, including greater interest in studying and improved grades.
