Ahead of Banpo Elementary School's reopening Tuesday, officials walked the school commute routes Wednesday to check safety facilities, pedestrian conditions, school zone equipment, jaywalking barriers and visibility mirrors.
Seocho-gu conducted a pre-emptive school route safety inspection Wednesday along the commute paths of Banpo Elementary School, ahead of the school's reopening, to help create a safe environment for students walking to and from class.
The inspection was organized to survey actual student commute routes in advance of the Tuesday reopening, identify potential hazards early and gather input from parents and students to improve overall commuting conditions.
Particular caution is warranted given that move-ins at the nearby Raemian Trinione apartment complex have been under way in earnest since early this month, while construction continues on the Banpo Districts 1, 2 and 4 apartment projects — meaning construction vehicles and pedestrians share the same routes around the school.
In response, the district is working to separate, as much as possible, the routes and schedules of construction vehicles from those of students commuting to and from school, and is deploying flaggers and safety personnel around construction sites.
About 30 people took part in the afternoon inspection, including Seocho-gu District Mayor Jeon Seong-su, district and school officials, parents and students. Participants walked the actual student commute routes, observing the surrounding environment from a child's eye level and examining conditions at various points along the way.
The inspection covered the installation and management of safety facilities required under school zone designations, key traffic safety infrastructure such as jaywalking barriers and visibility mirrors, and overall pedestrian conditions including sidewalk width, vehicle traffic and sightlines at crosswalks.
Inspectors paid particular attention to spots that students and parents identified as inconvenient or potentially dangerous during actual commutes, and noted areas requiring improvement.
Hazards identified on-site and items requiring further improvement were shared among participants, and District Mayor Jeon, school representatives and parents held an on-site feedback session to discuss the inspection findings and the direction of future improvements.
Based on the inspection results and feedback gathered, the district plans to actively coordinate with relevant agencies on necessary improvements and carry out follow-up measures in sequence.
"Through this advance inspection ahead of Banpo Elementary School's reopening, I hope we can identify hazards along the school routes early and proactively address any needed improvements," District Mayor Jeon said. "We will continue to listen carefully to the voices from the field and do our utmost to create a safe commuting environment so that parents can send their children to school with peace of mind."
