The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry has named Kim Jong-il, former director general of the New Trade Order Strategy Office at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, as its new full-time vice chairman.
The chamber said Tuesday it plans to hold an extraordinary general meeting on Sept. 8 to put forward a motion to approve the appointment. If passed, Kim will be officially confirmed as full-time vice chairman.
Kim has built extensive experience and expertise in key national industries — including industrial policy, trade, energy and semiconductors — over more than 30 years spanning both government and the private sector.
During his time at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, he held a series of senior posts, including director of the Semiconductor and Display Division, director of the Americas Trade Division, trade agreement policy director, energy innovation policy director, and director general of the New Trade Order Strategy Office, where he led efforts to strengthen industrial competitiveness and shape trade policy.
He subsequently served as head of global business policy at SK Square and as executive vice president overseeing external affairs at SK hynix, responding to shifts in the global trade environment, building cooperation frameworks between government and business, and strengthening competitiveness in advanced industries. His track record of overseeing industrial and trade policy in government, and managing external affairs and global operations in the private sector, is seen as equipping him with the capacity to understand and bridge the perspectives of both government and the business community.
"At a time of growing uncertainty in the global economy and trade environment, I will actively champion the voices of businesses on the ground so that our companies can grow steadily and seize new opportunities," Kim said. "I will faithfully serve as a bridge between government and the business community, and do my utmost to enhance the global competitiveness of Korean companies."
