Two countries share knowledge on international standards and AI to deepen IP cooperation
South Korea and China are deepening cooperation on intellectual property informatization, sharing information and experience on topics ranging from international standards to AI.
The Korean Intellectual Property Office held the 20th Korea-China Intellectual Property Informatization Expert Meeting on Tuesday at the Government Daejeon Complex in Seo-gu, Daejeon, together with experts from China's National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).
The forum was established following a meeting between the two countries' patent office chiefs in 2002 and has since been hosted alternately by each side. Over more than two decades, it has served as a platform for sharing experience in IP informatization policy and system development, fostering technical cooperation and mutual advancement.
At this year's meeting, experts from both sides are set to exchange views on recent developments in IP informatization systems, progress in developing systems to comply with the World Intellectual Property Organization's ST.92 international IP information standardization framework, and trends in IP data exchange standards.
Particularly amid the rapid spread of AI technology across IP administration, the meeting will focus on each country's AI applications and innovation cases. The Korean Intellectual Property Office will present the current status and future plans for its AI-based patent and design search systems, while CNIPA will share how it has introduced AI into patent examination and applied the technology to routine administrative tasks.
In addition, attendees will see a live demonstration of the patent search and examination systems that the Korean Intellectual Property Office has built and operates. Through the on-site showcase of how AI is being applied in patent search and examination, the two sides plan to deepen technical understanding between their experts and continue substantive technology exchange, including sharing experience and operational cases from AI adoption.
Jeong Jae-hwan, director general of the IP Information Bureau at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, said the meeting was "a meaningful occasion for the two countries to share the latest technologies and experience in IP informatization and explore avenues for cooperation." He added that the office would "continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation in IP administration innovation using advanced technologies such as AI, as well as in international standardization."
