Seoul's Gangseo-gu district is launching the "Gangseo Retail Complex Alley Sopung Market" to breathe new life into struggling local commercial streets and boost the district economy, district Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon announced.
The event — whose name evokes "a market full of smiles and benefits" — is designed to showcase the appeal of the district's large wholesale retail complex, which handles a wide range of manufactured goods including household items and sundries, while drawing visitors to the area through food, entertainment and activities.
The Sopung Market kicks off Saturday and runs for three consecutive Saturdays — Sept. 5 and Sept. 12 — from noon to 3 p.m. each day near the Gangseo Retail Complex Customer Service Center at 117 Gukhoe-daero 7-gil.
The event's lineup includes a flea market, food stalls, busking performances and hands-on activity booths.
The flea market will offer retail complex products at discounted prices, aiming to attract visitors of all ages. The food stalls will center on popular Korean street-food favorites — dakgangjeong (sweet fried chicken), sotteok sotteok (sausage and rice cake skewers) and french fries — with something for everyone.
Busking performances will add to the festive atmosphere. A different lineup of singers will take the stage each week, offering a fresh experience at every showing.
Family-friendly activity booths will also be on hand. Younger visitors can enjoy face painting using skin-safe pigments, while those looking for a more creative outlet can try calligraphy — hand-lettering a one-of-a-kind phrase in their own personal style. The booths are designed to give visitors lasting memories.
Following the three-week Sopung Market run, the district plans to hold the "Gangseo Retail Complex Community Festival" on Oct. 3. The festival will expand on the flea market and food stall format with the addition of a residents' singing contest, aiming to draw more foot traffic and inject further energy into the local commercial district.
"This Sopung Market will serve as an opportunity for local merchants to showcase the retail complex's quality products to a wider audience, while giving residents a small but meaningful source of everyday joy — a space where both sides can thrive together," Jin said. "We warmly invite all residents to come and visit."
