Mathematics and AI are being brought to bear on the technical challenges that medical and healthcare companies face in developing and commercializing their products.
The National Institute for Mathematical Sciences said it held a "government-industry-academia collaborative technology development networking day" on Thursday at the Commodore Hotel in Busan, in partnership with the Seo-gu District Office of Busan and the Busan Economic Promotion Agency.
The event drew about 50 participants, including researchers from the institute, officials from the Busan Economic Promotion Agency, and representatives and experts from 15 medical and healthcare companies.
The networking day was organized to identify the on-the-ground difficulties that local medical and healthcare firms encounter during product development and commercialization, and to find tailored solutions by combining mathematical science with AI and data analysis technologies.
A particular focus was placed on having researchers and experts examine each company's specific technical challenges firsthand and propose approaches using mathematical analysis and AI — with the aim of strengthening full-cycle support from technology development through to commercialization.
The event opened with a presentation by Yoon Kang-jun, director of the institute's Busan Medical Mathematics Center, on the center and its initiative to build a medical mathematics ecosystem in Busan. That was followed by company technology introductions, sharing of on-site difficulties, and expert technical consultations.
Participating companies — including Miga Medical, GH Innotech, J-Eous, the Composite Material Forming and Repair Industry Association, Wellsee and Makerfun — shared the technical challenges and key commercialization issues they face in the field. Researchers from the institute and specialists in various fields then provided company-specific advisory services, offering mathematical analysis methods and AI application strategies tailored to each firm.
Networking sessions were also held to explore potential technology and business collaboration among the participating companies. The institute plans to use the event as a springboard to build a sustainable "government-industry-academia-research-hospital" cooperative network linking companies, local governments, universities, research institutions and hospitals.
"This was a meaningful occasion to work together on overcoming the technological limitations that medical and healthcare companies experience in the field, drawing on the institute's capabilities in mathematical analysis and AI," Yoon said. "We will actively contribute to resolving regional industry challenges and supporting the sustained growth of companies through our government-industry-academia-research cooperative network."
