The large soccer field at Mangwon flood basin is set to be transformed into a year-round green sports venue.
Mapo-gu announced it will install artificial turf at the large soccer field at Mangwon flood basin (198 Bangulnaero 11-gil) so residents can exercise in a safe and comfortable environment.
The roughly 7,000-square-meter field currently operates on a bare dirt surface, which generates heavy dust, develops uneven patches and poses a significant injury risk to players who fall.
The district secured about 1 billion won in Seoul Metropolitan Government special adjustment grants and broke ground on the artificial turf installation in early August.
The project will lay artificial turf across the field to allow players to move freely during dribbling, passing and other match activities, and will install drainage panels beneath the surface to absorb impact and channel water.
Because the site serves as a water retention facility, the construction will use a concrete foundation rather than decomposed granite.
Large construction vehicles must access the site for excavation and other work, so the district will restrict use of the soccer field and surrounding track through Oct. 20 to prevent accidents during the construction and facility inspection period.
Once construction is complete, players will be able to enjoy soccer on a level surface less affected by season or weather. The field will maintain green turf even in winter, improving convenience for users and supporting residents' recreational sports activities.
Mapo-gu District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun said he hopes the renovated Mangwon flood basin soccer field will become a more vibrant space where residents of all generations can come together for healthy leisure. "We will continue to expand community sports infrastructure in line with residents' diverse recreational needs," he said.
