A man in his 50s who beat his pet dog on a public street for more than 20 minutes has been referred to prosecutors.

The Gwangju Dongbu Police Station said Thursday it had forwarded the case of a man identified only as A, in his 50s, to prosecutors without detention on charges of violating the Animal Protection Act by repeatedly striking a pet animal.

A is accused of beating his 6-month-old puppy for about 20 minutes on a sidewalk in Sansu-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, at around 11 p.m. on Aug. 3.

During police questioning, A stated that he struck the dog as a form of discipline.

An animal welfare group that learned of the incident through social media took the dog into temporary care, but A demanded its return and the animal was handed back to him through legal procedures.
