Gallery Joeun in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, is hosting "Cloud 9," a solo exhibition by Seong Ryul, through Sept. 19. The exhibition brings together recent works that focus on themes the artist has long explored — memory, time, growth and the sensation of moments slipping away.
Seong works in acrylic gouache, building up thin, translucent layers of color. Rather than erasing the natural boundaries and traces that form as the paint dries, he embraces them, using the accumulated layers to evoke a sense of depth — of air and time suspended within the image. The artist has said his aim is not to paint a landscape itself, but to capture the "air" that exists within it.
