A study finding that the De Simone Formulation — the core ingredient in De Simone, Hecto Healthcare's premium probiotic brand — improves gut microbial and bile acid metabolic structures has been published in an international academic journal.

Hecto Healthcare announced Thursday that results of a human clinical trial of the De Simone Formulation, conducted by Mayo Clinic researchers on adult patients with a history of bile acid malabsorption (BAM), have been published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, an international gastroenterology journal.

The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial analyzing data from 22 BAM patients. Participants consumed either the De Simone Formulation or a placebo daily for three weeks at a total dose of 2.7 trillion CFU per day.

Analysis showed that the De Simone Formulation group had significantly lower fecal ratios of primary bile acids and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) — which is involved in intestinal fluid secretion — compared with the placebo group. The formulation group also showed significant changes in gut microbial community structure (beta-diversity), with notable increases in the proportions of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Streptococcus thermophilus, two key strains in the De Simone Formulation.

Because bile acids not reabsorbed in the colon can trigger chronic diarrhea, the findings are significant: they demonstrate that improving the gut environment through probiotics may apply to metabolic management of gastrointestinal conditions.

World-renowned probiotic researcher Dr. Claudio De Simone developed the De Simone Formulation, which has to date been the subject of more than 460 international academic papers and holds patents in 15 countries.
