A man in his 60s suspected of attempting to rape a woman in her 20s he met through an open chat app has been referred to prosecutors.

Uijeongbu Police Station sent the man, identified only as A, to prosecutors in custody on Wednesday on charges of attempted rape and violations of the Narcotics Control Act.

A is accused of attempting to sexually assault a woman in her 20s, identified as B, at a motel in Uijeongbu at around 5 p.m. on July 27.

Investigators found that A had gone to the motel where B was staying to carry out the attack. Police responded to a report and arrested A at the scene. The two had met through an open chat app.

A also faces charges of using methamphetamine at the motel. At the time of his arrest, syringes and other drug paraphernalia were found at the scene, and a preliminary drug test came back positive.

However, A has denied the attempted rape charges.

"The drug analysis results from the National Forensic Service have not yet come in, and we will refer the case for additional charges as soon as we receive them," a police official said. "Based on our investigation, we determined that B had no criminal involvement in drugs or other offenses."
