KAIST's board of trustees held an extraordinary meeting Tuesday at its main campus in Daejeon and named Kim Do-kyung, an honorary professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, as the 11th principal of the Korea Science Academy of KAIST.

Kim's appointment requires approval from the deputy prime minister and minister of science and ICT, after which the KAIST president will formally install him. He will begin official duties upon appointment. His term runs four years through 2030.

Kim graduated from Seoul National University and earned his master's and doctoral degrees from KAIST. After joining KAIST as a professor in 1994, he held a range of senior administrative posts — including dean of academic affairs, dean of admissions, director of the Nano Convergence Research Institute and director of the International Student Support Center — building broad experience across education, research and university administration.

As dean of admissions, he designed the country's first in-depth interview-based admissions officer model, contributing to innovation in the selection and education of science and technology talent. He currently serves as an honorary professor in KAIST's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, advising on advances in education and research.

Drawing on his expertise in education and administration, Kim plans to strengthen student-centered creative and convergence education and develop the Korea Science Academy of KAIST into a world-leading institution for gifted science education.
