HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will supply engine-based power generation equipment worth 956 billion won ($673 million) to data centers operated by major US technology companies.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said Monday it had signed a contract to that effect with Kovan Energy Group, a US energy infrastructure development company.

The power generation equipment is built around HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' 9.6 MW HiMSEN engine, which the company says offers world-class generation efficiency and reliability. Capable of round-the-clock operation at high output and high efficiency, the engine has earned recognition for its competitive edge in the data center market.

The two companies plan to build on the supply contract by deepening cooperation on follow-on projects and expanding their business partnership further.

As growth in the AI market drives demand for power generation equipment at US data centers, HD Hyundai has been stepping up its group-wide response.

HD Korea Shipbuilding, the intermediate holding company for the shipbuilding division, is focused on developing core technology for floating data centers, while HD Hyundai Electric and HD Hyundai Marine Solution are expanding their businesses in power distribution and electrical equipment supply, and power generation engine maintenance and repair, respectively.

"The steady stream of collaboration inquiries coming to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in the data center power generation engine market is proof that HiMSEN engine's technology and reliability have been proven," an HD Hyundai Heavy Industries official said. "We will explore diverse business opportunities to strengthen our position in the power generation equipment market."

Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been actively building new business models for sustainable growth — most recently joining affiliates including HD Korea Shipbuilding, HD Hyundai Robotics, HD Hyundai Marine Solution and Avikus to develop an integrated robot- and data-based hull management solution that automates the entire process from hull diagnosis and cleaning to performance verification, a first in the shipbuilding industry.
