The Korea Coast Guard will operate an investigation reform task force ahead of the revised Code of Criminal Procedure taking effect in October.

The coast guard said Saturday it had launched the investigation reform TF and begun operations. The TF was established to comprehensively review the coast guard's investigative practices and develop improvement measures. Where the review identifies areas requiring system changes, the coast guard plans to pursue amendments to relevant laws and administrative regulations.

The TF will hold weekly meetings focused on four areas: follow-up measures related to the revised criminal procedure law, blocking investigative misconduct, strengthening investigative impartiality and enhancing investigative capacity. It will incorporate input from field personnel and outside experts as it works toward reform.

Jo Yun-man, the coast guard's investigation bureau chief who leads the TF, said the body would "actively gather diverse opinions to establish a fair and professional investigation regime that meets the public's expectations and to fundamentally block investigative misconduct." He added that the TF aimed to "develop investigation reform measures that lead to substantive system improvements and realize a coast guard investigation that the public can trust."
