Korea Minting and Security Printing Corp. marked its 75th anniversary by gathering former presidents to discuss a vision for its 80th anniversary in 2031, setting targets of 1 trillion won ($702 million) in annual sales and becoming the world's first digital minting agency.
The state-run corporation held a roundtable Friday at its currency product showroom in Mapo-gu, Seoul, bringing together six former CEOs: Park Won-chul (18th president), Lee Hae-sung (19th), Jeon Yong-hak (20th), Yoon Young-dae (21st), Kim Hwa-dong (22nd) and Ban Jang-sik (24th).
The gathering reviewed the corporation's transformation from a currency-manufacturing operation into a provider of digital public services — including passports, gift certificates, mobile identification cards, digital local currency and a digital Onuri gift certificate platform. The shift helped the corporation post record sales of 639.5 billion won last year, its highest since its founding, and earn an A rating in the 2025 public institution management evaluation.
The former presidents identified several key growth drivers for the years ahead: expanding digital identity services such as mobile ID, strengthening competitiveness in digital payment platforms including local gift certificates and Onuri vouchers, developing cultural businesses around commemorative coins and currency merchandise, and pursuing overseas markets for high-value-added products such as cotton pulp and security ink. On that basis, they proposed a vision of reaching 1 trillion won in sales and becoming the world's first digital minting agency by the corporation's 80th anniversary in 2031.
"Today's Korea Minting Corp. was built on the dedication of our former CEOs," President Seong Chang-hun said. "We will examine the visions of '1 trillion won in sales' and 'world's first digital minting agency' in depth through internal discussions and expert seminars."
