All three major US stock indexes closed lower Thursday as tensions in the Middle East intensified and international oil prices surged.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 506.93 points, or 0.97 percent, to close at 51,711.65.

The S&P 500 dropped 90.66 points, or 1.21 percent, to finish at 7,408.30, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite shed 553.21 points, or 2.15 percent, to end at 25,137.69.
