Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance said Monday it received the Financial Services Commission chairman's commendation for financial security merit at an Information Security Day ceremony hosted by the Financial Security Institute on Friday.

Information Security Day is a statutory commemorative day established to promote cybersecurity awareness and a culture of data protection across government agencies and financial institutions. This year's event brought together financial sector leaders to share key issues and discuss coordinated responses as AI-driven cyberattacks grow increasingly sophisticated.

Samsung Fire was recognized for strengthening its cyber threat response capabilities and building a robust personal data protection framework through expanded information security investment and enhanced governance. The company has continuously upgraded its enterprise-wide security management system and reports major information security matters directly to its board of directors.

To prevent security incidents, the insurer conducted a comprehensive assessment of its information security posture and drew up a three-year mid-to-long-term plan for systematic security improvements. It also proactively encrypted key personal data — including customers' resident registration numbers, names and contact details. In addition, Samsung Fire has maintained its ISMS-P and ISO 27001 certifications, renewing both on an ongoing basis to uphold a solid personal data protection management system.

Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eok-won presented the commendation in person at the ceremony held Friday at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul. About 170 people attended, including representatives from financial companies, related institutions and fintech firms.

"Our efforts to safeguard customers' personal information against ever-evolving cyber threats and data breach attempts have been recognized through this award," said Cho Seong-ok, Samsung Fire's chief information security officer and senior managing director. "We will continue to build out our AI security framework to strengthen our core business competitiveness and manage personal data with the utmost rigor, so that we become an even more trusted financial company for our customers."
