Cheorwon-gun has opened the Soisan underground bunker — a front-line military fortress that was once a restricted military control zone — to the general public, free of charge.
The site was renovated to allow visitors to use it comfortably for tourism and educational purposes while preserving its original structure.
According to Cheorwon-gun on Thursday, the Soisan underground bunker has been transformed from a space once charged with tension into a cultural asset conveying messages of peace and ecology.
The roughly 300-meter interior tunnel was carefully secured and prepared so that visitors can fully experience the historical atmosphere of the site.
The underground bunker is expected to generate tourism and economic synergies with the Cheorwon History and Culture Park and the Soisan monorail.
Tourists who ride the monorail to the summit of Soisan can take in panoramic views of Baengma Hill, the Cheorwon Plain and the DMZ peace zone before walking through the underground bunker itself — a layered route that connects past and present.
In addition, the site was designed to be accessible not only to monorail riders but also to hikers and trekking visitors on Soisan, who can move freely and explore the bunker as part of a walking trail network.
The formal opening is expected to raise the cultural value of Cheorwon's security-related assets, further cementing the city's identity as a city of peace.
