Shim Jae-won, the nephew actor Shim Hye-jin raised like a son, drew attention with his striking looks and impressive vocal talent.

The Monday episode of TV Chosun's variety program "Joseon's Loveman" featured a singing competition special marking the show's fifth anniversary. Shim Hye-jin's nephew Shim Jae-won took the stage to the delight of viewers.

Shim Jae-won had previously appeared on the show's "Sixth-Rating Club" segment, where his chiseled features earned him comparisons to actor Won Bin.

Shim Jae-won revealed the secret behind his distinctive looks, saying his father is American and his mother is Korean. He added that he has lived in South Korea for a long time and proudly said he completed his mandatory military service, finishing his full term as an artilleryman in 2022.

He also mentioned his aunt, saying he came on the show because Shim Hye-jin appears on it regularly.

Shim Hyun-seop, also a relative of Shim Hye-jin, added an emotional note, explaining that after Jae-won's mother — Hye-jin's younger sibling — passed away, Shim Hye-jin took him in and raised him as her own son.

After Shim Jae-won performed "Fly Me to the Moon," the judges expressed admiration for his voice, saying they hoped he would continue pursuing music.

Meanwhile, Shim Jae-won first became known to the public through past appearances alongside Shim Hye-jin on programs including "Star Life Theater." A jazz vocal major at the New York College of Art, he also generated buzz after advancing to the finals of the American talent show "American Idol."
