People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok said Tuesday that his party must hold the right to recommend a special prosecutor to investigate allegations of voting rights violations during the June 3 local elections, calling the proposed probe a "people's special prosecutor" won through public demand.

Jang made the remarks in a Facebook post Tuesday, saying "there is no room for political calculations of gain and loss."

"The People Power Party must be the one to recommend the special prosecutor," he said. "Otherwise, it would be a 'fraudulent special prosecutor' — special in name only."

He urged that the special prosecutor be launched as soon as possible, adding, "That is the will of the people. Let us begin discussions right now, today, Tuesday."

Turning to the Democratic Party of Korea, Jang said, "Are you planning to gloss over this again? Go ahead and try. If you attempt to deceive the people over a people's special prosecutor, the people's anger will bring down the government."
