Seongnam city has completed heat-reflective paint coating on the rooftops of 18 senior centers, the city announced Tuesday.

From February through May, the city invested a total of 120 million won ($77,800) — including a 50 percent national government subsidy — to coat 2,455 square meters of rooftop space across the 18 facilities.

Heat-reflective paint is a specialized coating that reflects solar radiation, reducing the amount of heat transferred into a building's interior and cutting cooling energy consumption.

Surface temperature measurements taken after the coating was applied showed that treated rooftops registered 31.0 degrees Celsius, compared with 51.3 degrees on untreated rooftops — a difference of 20.3 degrees.

The city said it expects the lower rooftop temperatures to reduce air conditioner run time, easing electricity costs at the senior centers.

The reduction in cooling equipment use is projected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 8.37 tCO₂eq (tons of carbon dioxide equivalent) per year.

That figure was calculated by applying a greenhouse gas reduction coefficient of 0.00341 tCO₂eq per square meter to the total treated rooftop area of 2,455 square meters.
