Board of Audit and Inspection chief Kim Ho-cheol has recommended Lee Jin-guk, a professor at Ajou University School of Law and former Cheong Wa Dae judicial affairs secretary, as a new audit commissioner, the BAI said Friday.

Lee is a criminal law specialist from Goseong, South Gyeongsang Province. He earned his undergraduate degree in law from Dong-A University before obtaining a doctorate in law from Philipps University of Marburg in Germany.

From 2002 to 2007, Lee served as a research fellow and head of planning and coordination at the Korea Institute of Criminology and Justice. He has been a professor at Ajou University School of Law since 2007.

He has also been active in national judicial administration and criminal law, serving as a specialist member of the Ministry of Justice's special committee on enacting the Administrative Fines Act, an evaluator on judicial reform for the Office for Government Policy Coordination, and president of the Korean Criminal Law Association.

From last June through February, Lee served as judicial affairs secretary in the presidential Civil Affairs Office at Cheong Wa Dae, where he helped design various judicial reform proposals.

"Based on his firm convictions on human rights protection, expertise in criminal law, and broad experience in the public sector, Lee is expected to play an important role in fostering a human rights-friendly audit environment and enhancing the objectivity of audit outcomes," the BAI said.
