MOU signed for future mobility research cooperation

Joint research to cover electrification and other key next-generation vehicle technologies

The Korea Automobile Research Institute announced Thursday that it has established a cooperative framework with Sweden's Chalmers University of Technology for joint research on core future mobility technologies.

Korea Automobile Research Institute President Jin Jong-wook and Tomas Mckelvery, vice dean of electrical engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, signed a memorandum of understanding for future mobility research cooperation at the Chalmers campus in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Wednesday (local time).

Founded in 1829, Chalmers University of Technology is one of Sweden's leading engineering universities and a driving force behind advanced technology development in Europe. It is particularly prominent in eco-friendly and energy technology, and maintains close ties with industry partners including Volvo, Scania, SKF and Tesla's European operations.

The two institutions agreed through the MOU to expand collaboration on developing core technologies in the future mobility sector.

Specific areas of joint research will include power electronics, electric machinery, energy systems and applied research; commercial hydrogen storage technology and advanced thermal management; hydrogen fuel cell systems; and solutions for building a future hydrogen society.

Through the partnership with Chalmers, the Korea Automobile Research Institute plans to strengthen its technological competitiveness in future mobility and broaden the industrial application of eco-friendly mobility technologies.

"Eco-friendly hydrogen, electrification and thermal management technologies are key factors that will determine the competitiveness of the future mobility industry," Jin said. "Building on our cooperation with Chalmers — a hub of cutting-edge European technology and industry-academia collaboration — we will advance our research and extend it through domestic industry-academia-research partnerships, contributing to the creation of a global technology cooperation ecosystem and the sustainable development of the mobility industry."

Meanwhile, the Korea Automobile Research Institute has been expanding cooperation with a range of domestic and international partners to enhance its mobility technology competitiveness. Last year, it signed an MOU with HL Klemove, an autonomous driving solutions affiliate of HL Group, on future mobility technology cooperation and the creation of an innovative industrial ecosystem.
