Novelist Lee Seung-u and painter Ha Chong-hyun are among seven artists elected as new members of the National Academy of Arts of Korea.

The academy announced the new members and the recipients of its Academy Award and Young Artists Award at its 77th regular general assembly on Thursday.

The seven new members elected this year span a range of artistic disciplines: novelist Lee Seung-u; Ha Chong-hyun, emeritus professor at Hongik University's College of Fine Arts and painter; Won Moon-ja, emeritus professor at Ewha Womans University and painter; Song Su-ryeon, emeritus professor at Chung-Ang University and painter; Lim Jae-won, emeritus professor at Seoul National University and daegeum player; theater critic Yoo Min-young; and film director Bae Chang-ho. With the seven additions, total academy membership grows from 76 to 83.

New members are selected from artists with at least 30 years of professional experience, based on nominations from more than 230 cultural and arts institutions, organizations and university presidents nationwide.

The academy also named the recipients of the 71st National Academy of Arts Award: novelist Lee Dong-ha in literature, pianist Kim Dae-jin in music, and theater director Kim Do-hun in drama.

The recipients of the 5th National Academy of Arts Young Artists Award are novelist Choi Eun-young in literature, artist Kim Min-ae in fine arts, composer Kim Shin and daegeum player Yoo Kyung-eun in music, theater director Kim Su-jeong in drama, film director Yoon Ga-eun in film, and dancer Hong Kyung-hwa in dance.

Academy Award recipients will each receive 50 million won ($32,500), while Young Artists Award recipients will each receive 25 million won. A ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 7.
