Record broken during Germany vs. Ecuador Group E match

The 2026 North America World Cup broke the all-time World Cup attendance record on Friday (local time).

During the morning Group E finale between Germany and Ecuador, the stadium scoreboard flashed a new cumulative attendance figure of 3,605,357 — surpassing the previous record of about 3.6 million set at the 1994 United States World Cup.

The expanded 48-nation format has played a central role in the milestone, with the tournament scheduled to run a total of 104 matches.

With virtually every match selling out and 48 games still to go, analysts expect the final tally to far exceed the 1994 record, which was set across just 52 matches.

"Americans want to be there in person for historic moments at major sporting events," said Dan Rascher, a sports economics expert at the University of San Francisco.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that analysts have raised concerns that high ticket prices and travel restrictions imposed by the Donald Trump administration on certain countries likely kept many fans away. "There are probably a lot of people who wanted to attend but couldn't because of high ticket prices and travel restrictions," said Victor Matheson, a sports business expert and economist at Holy Cross College.
