A man in his 70s died after calling police to report that he had assaulted his wife, prompting investigators to open a pre-indictment probe.

According to the Seoul Gangdong Police Station, the man called police from an apartment in Dunchon-dong at around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, saying he had beaten his wife and feared she might die. He then jumped from the building.

Residents who found the man alerted police. Firefighters who responded to the scene performed CPR after finding him in cardiac arrest, but he died.

His wife, the victim, is receiving treatment at a hospital and is not in critical condition.

Police believe the assault was an impulsive act that occurred during a domestic dispute and are investigating the full circumstances of the incident.

With the suspect dead, police plan to close the case on grounds that prosecution is no longer possible once the investigation is complete.
