Host nation Mexico swept through the group stage with three straight wins to finish top of Group A and advance directly to the round of 32. South Korea dropped to third place after losing to South Africa and must now wait on results from other groups to secure a wild-card berth.

Mexico routed the Czech Republic 3-0 on Thursday (Korean Standard Time) at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey in their final Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Having already beaten South Korea and the Czech Republic, Mexico completed a perfect group stage with nine points to advance as group winners. The Czech Republic finished bottom of the group with just one point.

Mexico unsettled the Czech Republic from the opening minutes with aggressive high pressing and quick play down the flanks.

The Czech Republic tried to build attacks by controlling possession, but Mexico repeatedly won the ball back and created several clear chances on the counter.

After scoring the opener, Mexico exploited the space behind the Czech defensive line as it pushed higher, adding a second goal and then a third to seal the win. Superior transition speed and pressing intensity powered Mexico's three-match winning run.

Mexico's victory spared South Korea from dropping to the bottom of the group, keeping the Czech Republic below them in the standings.

South Korea's 0-1 defeat to South Africa left them third in the group with three points and a goal difference of minus one, ending their hopes of advancing automatically to the round of 32.

With the tournament expanded to 48 teams, the top eight third-place finishers across all groups also advance to the knockout stage. South Korea remain in contention for a wild-card spot, though their negative goal difference is a concern.

The national team must now wait for the final round of group-stage matches to conclude. Whether South Korea advance to the round of 32 depends on the points and goal differences posted by third-place finishers in the remaining groups.
