'Some say I should stay on until the party convention, but my role ends here'
Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Cho Seung-rae announced Wednesday that he had stepped down as the party's secretary-general.
Cho posted on Facebook the previous day that he was resigning after "just over 10 months" since accepting an offer from party leader Jung Chung-rae on Aug. 3 last year. Jung had announced his own resignation as party leader at a Supreme Council meeting earlier that day.
"There were rewarding moments and regrets, but I worked without any personal agenda, looking only to the party and its members," Cho wrote. "I have no regrets."
He acknowledged that some had urged him to remain in the post through the upcoming party leadership convention for the sake of stability and continuity, but said his role had come to an end. "I am grateful to everyone who cheered me on and to everyone who offered sharp criticism and advice," he added.
Cho also extended special thanks to officials at the central party headquarters and regional chapters "who quietly and faithfully carried out their duties," saying he had been happy over the past 10 months thanks to them.
