In 1950, tanks appeared
before the gates of a Joseon-era fortress.
During the Korean War, Hwaseong suffered heavy damage
in battles against North Korean forces pushing south,
and the scars of war marked Janganmun Gate as well.
Even after the war ended,
restoring Hwaseong was no easy task —
survival came first.
It was not until the 1970s that the fortress
began to rise again through the Suwon Fortress Restoration Project.
Then in 1997,
Hwaseong was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Now at the Suwon Hwaseong Museum,
a special exhibition — "Donggo Dongnak Suwon Hwaseong" (Sharing Joys and Sorrows: Suwon Hwaseong) —
tells the story of the fortress's trials and recovery.
