A Taiwanese journalist has been indicted on espionage charges, including allegedly passing sensitive military information to China.

According to Taiwanese media outlets including Liberty Times, prosecutors indicted Lin Chen-yu, a reporter and anchor at cable broadcaster CTiTV, last month on charges of violating the National Security Act and anti-corruption laws. The case is currently being heard by a competent court.

Sources said Lin received funding from China to shape public opinion against a recall campaign targeting pro-China Kuomintang lawmakers.

Lin also allegedly paid military personnel to obtain sensitive classified information.

The leaked material reportedly included details related to war game exercises from the Han Kuang joint military drills — Taiwan's annual defense exercise simulating a Chinese invasion — as well as tri-service joint live-fire training control meetings, troop deployment adjustment plans for specific operational zones, annual operational training meetings for a certain corps, and information from missile base operational meetings.

Sources added that documents related to a staff roster at the Ministry of National Defense's Military Intelligence Bureau, intelligence equipment reports, and records concerning the army's 333rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade and the Marine Corps' 66th and 99th brigades — all of which have conducted military exchanges with US forces for years — were also leaked. They said the scope of the investigation could expand further.

Espionage arrests on the rise in Taiwan

Espionage arrests have been increasing in Taiwan since 2016, when independence-leaning President Tsai Ing-wen took office and cross-strait relations with China cooled sharply.

Taiwan's High Court overturned an acquittal and sentenced a suspected Chinese spy to seven years in prison, Taiwanese media including Liberty Times reported May 27.

The Taiwan High Court's Tainan branch handed down the ruling in an appeal hearing for a suspect identified only by the surname Huang, convicting him of organizing activities on behalf of China. Prosecutors had appealed after Huang was acquitted at the first trial.

In December 2023, a senior army officer who received operational funds from China and pledged to surrender if war broke out was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison.

In January, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said the country faced threats from hostile foreign forces, and accused China of attempting to interfere in all elections — including local elections and the next presidential election in 2028.
