A group backing Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Song Young-gil's bid for party leader held its inaugural ceremony Saturday at the Yeongbingwan banquet hall in Gwangju's Seo-gu.

More than 150 Democratic Party members from Gwangju, South Jeolla Province and North Jeolla Province attended the event.

Participants adopted a resolution urging Song, who has yet to formally announce his candidacy, to declare his run for the party leadership.

Choi Young-ho, a former Nam-gu district chief in Gwangju who chairs the preparatory committee, said sentiment in the Honam region is firmly behind Song. "The hearts of party members and the public in Honam want Rep. Song Young-gil as the leader who will rescue the Democratic Party from crisis and stand guard over the Lee Jae Myung government," Choi said. "He is the only person who can reform a Democratic Party standing at the edge of a cliff, resolve the political polarization driving extreme confrontation, and perfectly support the success of the Lee Jae Myung government."
