Company unveils HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B model, outlines full-stack defense AI strategy

Naver Cloud is pushing to complete an AI transformation across all branches of the South Korean military by 2030. The company unveiled its lightweight omnimodal model, HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B, as part of a defense AI full-stack strategy built on a sovereign AI infrastructure.

Naver Cloud announced Monday that it had showcased the HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B model and a range of defense AI use cases at the 2026 Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology Annual Conference.

Alongside this, the company presented a defense AI transformation roadmap for closed networks based on sovereign AI, covering the full stack from infrastructure and AI models to intelligent agents.

Modern battlefields demand real-time analysis of drone footage, satellite imagery, radio communications and operational documents, as well as rapid decision-making. Omnimodal AI — capable of processing not only text but also images, video and audio simultaneously — is drawing attention as a core technology for defense applications.

HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B is a lightweight omnimodal model optimized for defense environments. It is equipped with a proprietary vision encoder, HyperCLOVA X CLIP, and an audio encoder, enabling simultaneous processing of diverse data types. The model was also trained on a wide range of Korea-specific data, including hangul documents, to optimize it for defense use.

The 4B omnimodal model was built by applying pruning and knowledge distillation techniques to an existing 8B-class large language model backbone, cutting the model size in half while improving production efficiency over the original 8B omnimodal model. The result is a system capable of stable operation in computing-constrained environments — including cloud platforms, drones, unmanned systems and tactical vehicles — boosting the model's suitability for real-world defense deployment.

HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B can be applied across a wide range of scenarios: object detection from drone and coastal surveillance footage, change detection and analysis in satellite imagery, hazard identification at firing ranges and barracks, automatic recognition of military equipment, and battlefield map analysis. The model is expected to support intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance automation, explainable unmanned systems, and integrated situational awareness.

In addition, Naver Cloud highlighted a sovereign AI architecture capable of secure operation on closed networks as a core pillar of its defense strategy, reflecting the unique security requirements of the military sector.
