Upland mechanization at 63.3% as aging workforce deepens labor shortage

Daedong and its affiliate Daedong Mobility each won a prize in the concept design category of Germany's 2026 Red Dot Design Award, the companies announced Monday. The winning entries are Daedong's agricultural multi-platform robot RMRP-100 and Daedong Mobility's DDM Modular Mobility Platform.

The wins come as Daedong Group expands its product lineup beyond farm machinery into agricultural robots and electric mobility. Daedong previously won Red Dot and iF Design Award prizes in 2024 for its autonomous-driving concept tractor D-ACT, making this its first follow-up recognition in two years.

The RMRP-100 is an autonomous robot platform tailored for upland crop farming, designed to address the limits of mechanization in South Korea's aging rural communities. Already developed as a working prototype, the robot features autonomous driving, a variable wheel-track width that adjusts to crop height and row spacing, and electrified wheel drive.

Demand from the field is growing. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the mechanization rate for upland farming stood at just 63.3% as of 2024. Unlike paddy farming, upland farming involves a wide variety of crops and cultivation methods that make standardization difficult, and the sector is particularly hard hit by labor shortages driven by an aging workforce.

Daedong Mobility's DDM Modular Mobility Platform is a multipurpose modular electric mobility platform targeting residential communities in the US Sun Belt. Built on a shared chassis with interchangeable upper modules, it can be configured as a low-speed electric vehicle, a cargo carrier, an autonomous service robot and more. The platform has now won two major global design awards, following a prize at Italy's A' Design Award and now the Red Dot.

Daedong Group says it continues to develop concept designs and enter global awards competitions as a way to explore product directions in robotics and mobility before commercialization. The Red Dot Design Award is an international design competition that selects winners across three categories: product design, brand and communication design, and design concept.

Daedong posted consolidated sales of 1.4847 trillion won (approximately $977 million) last year. Operating profit rose 68.3 percent year on year to 31.1 billion won ($21 million). The earnings recovery has been attributed in part to the company's push to commercialize new products in future-farming areas such as transport robots and precision agriculture solutions, on top of its core farm machinery business.
