A woman's story has gone viral after her husband announced he wanted to use 50 million won (about $32,900) — a gift from her parents, who had made a large profit from share investments — to buy his parents a new vehicle.
The woman, identified only as A, an employee at a large conglomerate, posted her account Saturday on Blind, an anonymous online community for office workers, under the title "He says I'm selfish for not wanting to chip in for his parents' new car."
According to A, her parents had recently reaped significant gains from share investments and gave each of their children 50 million won. A, her husband, her oppa and his wife all received the same amount.
A's husband said he wanted to use his 50 million won to buy his parents a new vehicle.
The couple, now in their third year of marriage, have yet to buy a home and have been saving toward that goal. A had planned to set aside the gift from her parents as part of their housing fund.
"When we got married, we received no financial support from his side — my family gave us 300 million won," A wrote. "My husband earns about 1.5 million won more per month than I do, yet he gives his parents 1 million won every month. Meanwhile, we give my parents nothing."
Against that backdrop, A said she could not accept her husband's decision to spend money given by her parents on a car for his family.
"Honestly, do you think my parents gave him that money for his personal use?" she wrote, expressing her frustration.
A told her husband she wanted to save the money rather than spend it, since they were still trying to buy a home.
Her husband held firm, saying the money was given to him by her father and he would spend it as he saw fit. When A continued to object, he called her selfish.
He also argued that her father had bought a new car last year, asking how much longer his own parents were supposed to drive a vehicle more than 10 years old.
