Company unveils lightweight omnimodal 'HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B' model optimized for defense; sovereign AI full-stack strategy targets closed-network military environments
Naver Cloud is accelerating its push to complete an AI transformation across all branches of the South Korean military by 2030.
The company is backing the effort with a "defense AI full-stack strategy" built on a sovereign AI full-stack, anchored by the newly unveiled HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B — a lightweight omnimodal model developed in-house.
Naver Cloud announced Monday that it unveiled the HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B model at the 2026 Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology Annual Conference, where it also demonstrated a range of defense AI use cases.
Alongside this, the company presented a defense AI transformation roadmap for closed-network environments, outlining a full-stack strategy spanning infrastructure, AI models and AI agents.
Modern battlefields demand real-time analysis of drone footage, satellite imagery, radio communications and operational documents, as well as rapid decision-making. Omnimodal AI — capable of processing not only text but also images, video and audio simultaneously — is drawing growing attention as a core technology for defense applications.
HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B is a lightweight omnimodal model that Naver Cloud optimized for defense environments. It carries a proprietary vision encoder, HyperCLOVA X CLIP, and an in-house audio encoder, enabling simultaneous processing of diverse data types. The model was also trained on a broad range of Korea-specific data, including hangul documents, to tailor it for military use.
Naver Cloud built the 4B omnimodal model by applying pruning and knowledge distillation techniques to an existing 8B-class large language model backbone, cutting the model's size in half while improving production efficiency beyond that of the original 8B omnimodal model. The result is a system designed to operate reliably in computing-constrained environments — including drones, unmanned systems and tactical vehicles — boosting the model's practical deployability for on-the-ground defense AI applications.
HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B can be applied across a wide range of scenarios: object detection from drone and coastal surveillance footage, change detection and analysis of satellite imagery, hazard identification at firing ranges and barracks, automatic recognition of military equipment, and battlefield map analysis. The company expects the model to support intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance automation, explainable unmanned systems, and integrated situational awareness.
In addition, Naver Cloud presented a sovereign AI architecture — operable even within closed networks — as its core vision for the defense sector. The company said its defense AI full-stack, covering infrastructure through MLOps, large language models and AI agents, can secure data sovereignty and robust security.
Naver Cloud plans to complete the foundational infrastructure for defense AI transformation this year and to deploy AI agents across all defense domains by 2030, advancing the full AI transformation of the military through a phased buildup of autonomous operational support systems.
