LS Cable & System announced Monday it has won a turnkey contract worth 146 billion won ($96 million) for Phase 2 of the East Coast-Greater Seoul high-voltage direct current (HVDC) project. Combined with the Phase 1 contract covering the Donghae-Singapyeong section, the company has now secured a total of 235 billion won in work on the project.

The East Coast-Greater Seoul HVDC project is South Korea's largest power grid undertaking, designed to deliver large volumes of electricity generated on the east coast to the greater metropolitan area. HVDC transmits power with lower losses than alternating current (AC) and handles high-capacity loads more efficiently, making it a key infrastructure technology for the AI era.

LS Cable & System independently developed a 500-kilovolt (kV) HVDC cable designated a national core technology, and commercialized a 525kV, 90-degree Celsius HVDC cable with the world's largest transmission capacity. Building on that expertise, the company has broken into the submarine HVDC cable market long dominated by European rivals, completing projects including the Jeju 2nd and 3rd interconnection projects and the North Dangjin-Godeok Phase 1 and 2 projects.

Overseas, the company secured a contract worth approximately 3 trillion won from a 7 trillion won ultra-high-voltage grid project led by Germany's TenneT — the largest single-supplier award in that tender.

"HVDC projects are directly tied to the stability of the national power grid, so proven commercialization experience in actual grid operations matters as much as technical capability," said Kim Hyeong-won, head of LS Cable & System's Energy and Construction Business Division. "Drawing on our track record in major HVDC projects at home and abroad, we will actively pursue the West Coast energy highway project as well."
