Maj. Gen. Jeong Gu-hwan took office Friday as the 44th commander of the Army's 50th Infantry Division.

The newly appointed commander has served in a wide range of command and staff positions across both front-line and rear units.

Speaking at his inauguration ceremony at the division headquarters in Daegu, Jeong said the military exists for one purpose alone: to serve the people. "I will build a unit that always wins, continuously improves and is loved by the public," he said.

He added that he would forge "a combat-ready unit always prepared to fight, a smart and advanced force oriented toward the future through shared values, and a warm unit bound together by camaraderie and loyalty."
