The 2026 North America World Cup has introduced official mid-game breaks for the first time, opening the door to in-game advertising in soccer broadcasts.

Starting with this tournament, which kicked off in earnest Friday, FIFA is applying a three-minute "hydration break" at around the 22nd minute of each half in every match — regardless of temperature or humidity.

Cooling breaks have been used in the past during extreme heat, but mandatory application across all matches is a first.

The biggest change for broadcasters is the advertising opportunity. Soccer has long been considered one of the hardest sports to sell mid-game ads for, given its two uninterrupted 45-minute halves. The new breaks change that.

Broadcasters may begin airing commercials 20 seconds after the referee's whistle signals a break, and must return to match coverage at least 30 seconds before play resumes. That leaves an effective advertising window of roughly two minutes and 10 seconds within each three-minute stoppage.

The advertising market has responded enthusiastically. According to the Korea Broadcast Advertising Corporation (KOBACO) on Thursday, all commercial slots for KBS's broadcast of South Korea's Group A opener against the Czech Republic sold out at around 6 billion won (approximately $3.93 million). Virtual advertising worth 3.4 billion won also sold out early, as did the newly introduced hydration-break slots.

The breaks also give coaches a tactical window. Managers can now use the three minutes to adjust pressing positions, defensive spacing, set-piece assignments and substitution timing — tactical corrections that previously had to wait until halftime.

Meanwhile, South Korea, led by head coach Hong Myung-bo, defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in their Group A opener at Guadalajara Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico, on Friday.
