National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik on Friday named former lawmaker Ko Yong-jin as secretary general of the National Assembly, a minister-level post.

A spokesperson for the Speaker's office said Ko was chosen because he "has a deep understanding of the country's overall administrative mechanisms, having served in the legislature, the executive branch and local government — making him the right person to provide stable leadership over the Assembly's complex administrative organization."

The spokesperson added that Ko is expected to "draw on his proven political judgment and communication skills to support smooth cooperation between the ruling and opposition parties and raise the National Assembly Secretariat's capacity to engage with the public to a new level."

Born in 1964, Ko entered politics as a secretary in the office of then-Assembly Vice Speaker Cho Yun-hyeong, and went on to serve as a Seoul Metropolitan Council member, an administrative official at Cheong Wa Dae under the Roh Moo-hyun administration, and as a National Assembly member in the 20th and 21st Assemblies. His appointment is subject to approval by a plenary session of the National Assembly.
