Korean Air held a tree-planting event under its Green SkyPass Project at Mullae Neighborhood Park in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, on Thursday, the airline announced Friday.

The event was part of an urban forest initiative Korean Air is pursuing with the Yeongdeungpo-gu district office and the nonprofit Forest for Life. Employees from both Korean Air and Asiana Airlines participated, planting trees and carrying out environmental cleanup activities.

The Green SkyPass Project is Korean Air's ESG (environmental, social and governance) program that channels customer mileage use into tangible environmental action. When customers redeem mileage for international or domestic bonus tickets, or purchase Korean Air-branded products from the KE Design Store within the mileage mall, the airline pools a fund based on the number of transactions and directs it toward eco-friendly projects.

Using funds accumulated through the program, Korean Air joined a Yeongdeungpo-gu initiative to transform aging parks into forest-centered urban spaces. Mullae Neighborhood Park will preserve its existing large trees while expanding green areas to create a richer forest park. Walkways and other facilities are also set to be upgraded for safety and convenience. The park is scheduled to be completed by the end of this month.

"The Green SkyPass Project is a meaningful ESG initiative that turns customers' mileage use into environmental protection and social value creation," a Korean Air official said. "We will continue pursuing sustainable, eco-friendly efforts that customers and local communities can join together."

Korean Air successfully carried out its first Green SkyPass Project in 2022, creating a "SkyPass Forest" at Omok Park in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.
