Large-capacity handle tumbler goes viral on social media, sparking nationwide sellout
A large-capacity handle tumbler recently released by Daiso has gone viral among consumers, triggering a nationwide sellout.
According to industry sources Thursday, Daiso launched four versions of its large-capacity handle tumbler in late May. Available in four colors and offered in 900-milliliter and 1,200-milliliter sizes — larger than standard tumblers — the products feature a wide handle that draws comparisons to the popular American tumbler brand Stanley, earning them the nickname "Datanley."
Consumers have been particularly enthusiastic about the performance, calling it "better than expected" for a price of just 5,000 won (about $3.60). That is less than one-tenth the cost of Stanley's flagship Quencher Pro Tour FlipStraw Tumbler, which retails at around 69,000 won ($45) for the 1.18-liter version and 54,000 won for the 887-milliliter version.
Despite the low price, the Daiso tumbler features copper-plating coating to minimize heat loss and enhance insulation, uses grade-304 stainless steel for added durability, and includes a straw-compatible lid for convenience.
With demand surging, all four versions are now sold out on Daiso's online store. Stock has also become scarce at some physical locations, prompting a wave of social media posts from frustrated shoppers. "I went everywhere trying to find the Datanley and came up empty," one user wrote. Others said they had signed up for restock alerts, with one adding, "It's true — you just can't get one."
Meanwhile, more than 60 running apparel and accessory items Daiso released last month in collaboration with sports brand HEAD drew strong attention immediately after launch. The lineup — ranging from functional pieces such as nylon anoraks and sports shorts to practical accessories including running caps and foldable duffel bags — was priced between 1,000 and 5,000 won, and some items sold out shortly after going on sale.
Earlier, Daiso's "Artie Spread Color Balm," developed in collaboration with beauty brand Son & Park, similarly went viral as a budget alternative to Chanel's Lip & Cheek Balm. While the Chanel product sells for around 63,000 won, the Daiso version retails at just 3,000 won. More than a year after its launch, it remains difficult to find — cementing its status as a must-have item.
Industry observers expect "dupe consumption" — the practice of buying high-quality, low-cost alternatives to satisfy demand — to continue as prolonged inflation pushes consumers toward more affordable options.
