Actor Jeon Won-ju has opened up about how the typecasting she endured early in her career — repeatedly cast as a "sikmoe," or live-in housemaid — left emotional scars on her family.

A recent video on Jeon's YouTube channel "Jeonwonjuingong" showed her visiting a Buddhist temple with her son, during which the two reflected on that difficult period.

Her son recalled feeling embarrassed by his mother during his school years, admitting that even her appearances at school events were not always welcome to his younger self.

"There was the image she had from her roles on TV, and it was also hard having our family's private life become public knowledge," he said. "The way people looked at us back then felt like a burden. Looking back now it seems like nothing, but I think I was just too sensitive at that age."

Jeon said she remembered her son's reaction well.

"My son hated going out with me," she said. "When I tried to hold his hand, he would tell me to walk separately."

She added that his friends had taunted him by calling out "the maid is walking by" whenever she passed. "When I heard that, I made up my mind that I absolutely had to succeed — for my kids, if nothing else," she said.
