Two police officers who failed to respond to a suspected drunk-driving report because they were asleep have been placed under internal investigation, it has emerged.
The North Chungcheong Provincial Police Agency has launched an internal probe into two officers from a local precinct under the Eumseong Police Station, according to Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday.
Inspector A and Sergeant B were found to have ignored a citizen's report of a suspected drunk driver in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province, in the early hours of March 29, sleeping instead of responding to the call.
The reporting citizen had followed the suspected vehicle while calling police, but when no officers arrived after an hour, the citizen called again. The officers' failure to respond came to light as the 112 emergency dispatch center investigated the delay.
Police ultimately failed to stop the vehicle, leaving it unclear whether the driver had in fact been intoxicated.
The North Chungcheong Provincial Police Agency plans to convene a disciplinary committee after completing its internal investigation to determine the appropriate punishment for the two officers.
