Envoys to call on Mexican President Sheinbaum, attend South Korea match in Guadalajara on June 18

President Lee Jae Myung will dispatch two lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party of Korea — Rep. Lee Jae-jung and Rep. Kim Nam-hee — as special envoys to Mexico for the FIFA World Cup.

Chief presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said Tuesday in a written briefing that the government plans to send the two lawmakers to Mexico as special envoys on the occasion of the upcoming World Cup.

The envoys will call on Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to deliver a personal letter from President Lee congratulating Mexico on becoming the first country to host the World Cup three times, along with a message of his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, Kang said. They will also meet with members of the Mexican legislature to explain the administration's governing philosophy and foreign policy, and to discuss ways to deepen cooperation between the two countries, she added.

The delegation also plans to attend the South Korea-Mexico match in Guadalajara on June 18 to cheer on the national team and help foster greater people-to-people exchange and cooperation through sport, Kang said. The envoys will additionally visit a temporary consular office operating in the country to urge officials to ensure the safety of South Korean nationals traveling to Mexico during the World Cup, she said.
