Chungnam Art Museum, Gyeongnam Provincial Art Museum sign MOU to lay groundwork for exhibition and personnel exchanges
South Chungcheong Province has joined forces with the Gyeongnam Provincial Art Museum — a hub of contemporary art in the Yeongnam region — to strengthen the competitiveness of Korean art, following an earlier partnership with a Honam-region institution.
The province signed a memorandum of understanding with the Gyeongnam Provincial Art Museum on Tuesday at the museum, with Chungnam Art Museum Establishment Preparation Team Director Kim Jang-eon and Gyeongnam Provincial Art Museum Director Park Geum-suk among the officials in attendance. The MOU aims to build an inter-institutional cooperation framework and advance art and culture.
The agreement is expected to further consolidate the "Southern Korea Art Cooperation Network" that Chungnam Art Museum is pursuing — a network spanning the Chungcheong, Honam and Yeongnam regions — going well beyond a simple institutional exchange.
Under the MOU, the two institutions agreed to pool their efforts across several areas: jointly developing exhibition and academic education programs, conducting mutual investigation, research and use of artworks and archival materials, and exchanging and lending collection pieces.
In particular, the two sides will work together to share the accumulated experience and expertise of the Gyeongnam Provincial Art Museum, which has more than 20 years of history, and to help Chungnam Art Museum pursue dynamic planning and projects grounded in a firm institutional identity.
Building on that foundation, both institutions will focus on macro-level research and academic exchange aimed at establishing a new lineage in the history of Korean contemporary art, transcending regional boundaries.
Having extended its domestic wide-area cooperation base from the Honam region to the Yeongnam region, Chungnam Art Museum plans to pursue international exchanges with major art institutions in Singapore and the United Kingdom in the second half of this year, further expanding its global network.
Meanwhile, Chungnam Art Museum — under construction in Singyeong-ri, Hongseong-gun, with two below-ground floors and four above-ground floors — is on track to be completed and opened in the second half of next year.
