Program targets complexes at least 20 years old with fewer than 20 units

Seoul's Yangcheon-gu announced Tuesday it has shifted its Small Apartment Complex Support Project from periodic application rounds to a year-round, open-enrollment system. The change is aimed at reducing cases where residents miss application windows and lose access to support.

The program subsidizes safety repair costs for apartment complexes of fewer than 20 units that received occupancy approval at least 20 years ago. Support covers up to 80 percent of construction costs, capped at 20 million won (about $12,900) per complex. Eligible work includes repairs to outdoor structures — such as fences, retaining walls and stone embankments — that show cracks or pose a collapse risk. An on-site assessment team visits each property and a housing support review committee deliberates before final recipients and subsidy amounts are determined.

Alongside this, the district has begun covering fire insurance premiums and the installation of automatic emergency door openers on rooftops this year for small apartment complexes not required to carry disaster liability insurance.
