Daegu has submitted a 491 billion won (about $317 million) first supplementary budget for 2026 to the city council, linking the package to the central government's own supplementary spending to ease the burden of high oil prices, stabilize livelihoods and strengthen disaster and safety response.

Daegu city officials said Tuesday the supplementary budget is a focused, single-purpose package tied to the government's supplementary budget passed in March. It draws on additional national subsidies of 316.3 billion won and general grants of 144.9 billion won transferred from the central government, and prioritizes urgent projects to relieve residents struggling with surging fuel costs and to support everyday livelihoods.

The city's total budget will rise 4.2 percent from the original figure to 12.1988 trillion won.

By account type, the general account grows 466.9 billion won, or 5.0 percent, to 9.8281 trillion won, while the special account increases 24.1 billion won, or 1.0 percent, to 2.3707 trillion won.

The supplementary budget allocates 350.3 billion won in relief payments for residents hit by high oil prices, 18.3 billion won to reimburse public transit fares as the Middle East war drags on, and 42.3 billion won in fuel subsidies for the transportation industry.

An additional 36.2 billion won goes toward livelihood support measures, including care services for vulnerable groups and youth self-sufficiency programs. The budget also sets aside 6.7 billion won for daytime activity services for people with developmental disabilities, 530 million won for everyday care services, 480 million won to establish and operate a Youth Future Center, 2.14 billion won for a pilot program giving young people work experience through the social solidarity economy, and 700 million won to install wildfire surveillance cameras.

The first supplementary budget for 2026 is set to be finalized after review at the 325th Daegu City Council extraordinary session, which runs from Tuesday through June 18.

Kim Jeong-gi, acting Daegu mayor, said the supplementary budget "was drawn up with the highest priority on livelihood support projects for residents facing hardship from the Middle East war, in coordination with the government's supplementary budget."
