Fire at cardboard box factory spreads to 9 neighboring plants in Ansan; blaze contained after 10 hours

A fire that broke out in a factory-dense area of Danwon-gu, Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, spread to 10 adjacent factory buildings, burning through 11 structures in total before firefighters brought the main blaze under control roughly 10 hours and 30 minutes after it started.

According to fire authorities, the fire broke out at around 9:05 p.m. Sunday at a two-story cardboard box manufacturing factory in Seonggok-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan, with a total floor area of 944 square meters.

The flames then spread to nine neighboring factories, including facilities that manufacture air conditioners, gears, metal parts, iron frames, auto parts, cosmetics and industrial robots.

Fire authorities issued a Level 1 response at 9:10 p.m., five minutes after the fire was reported. As the blaze continued to spread, they raised the alert to Level 2 — requiring 51 to 80 vehicles — at 9:48 p.m.

Authorities downgraded the response back to Level 1 at 4:30 a.m. Monday and continued suppression efforts before bringing the main fire under control at around 7:42 a.m. A total of 83 pieces of equipment and 241 personnel were deployed.

Six workers at nearby factories evacuated on their own, and no casualties have been confirmed so far. The city of Ansan sent an emergency alert asking residents to close their windows and reroute vehicles away from surrounding roads.

An official from the Gyeonggi Province Fire and Disaster Headquarters said the large amount of paper stored inside the factory, combined with the high density of factories in the area, contributed to the time it took to bring the fire under initial control. The official added that crews were still clearing residual flames and that full suppression was expected to take considerable additional time.

Fire authorities plan to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage once it is fully extinguished.
