Passenger traffic grows average 22.7% annually since 2006 debut
Carrier becomes first domestic LCC to surpass 100 million cumulative passengers
Fleet modernization with B737-8 aircraft aims to boost efficiency
Jeju Air announced Friday that it has marked its 20th anniversary, crediting a single-fleet strategy and steady expansion of short- and medium-haul routes for its role in driving growth in South Korea's low-cost carrier (LCC) market since launching its first service on the Jeju–Gimpo route.
The airline began operations on June 5, 2006, on the Jeju–Gimpo route and has maintained a single-fleet model ever since, building cost competitiveness and operational efficiency in the process. The approach helped introduce meaningful competition to the domestic aviation market and made air travel accessible to a broader public.
In its early years, Jeju Air focused on expanding domestic routes. After the Gimpo–Jeju service, the carrier launched flights on the Gimpo–Busan and Busan–Jeju routes the same year. In March 2009, it entered the international market with an Incheon–Osaka service, later extending its network to Southeast Asia and the greater China region.
Passenger numbers grew consistently throughout that period. From 2006 through last year, Jeju Air posted an average annual passenger growth rate of 22.7 percent. The carrier transported roughly 250,000 passengers in its first year and surpassed 10 million annual passengers in 2017.
In July 2023, Jeju Air became the first domestic LCC to exceed 100 million cumulative passengers. Annual passenger numbers, which had fallen during the COVID-19 pandemic, recovered to above 10 million again from 2023. As of late May this year, cumulative passengers stood at 137.55 million. The airline has also held the top spot among domestic LCCs in annual passenger numbers for 20 consecutive years.
The single-fleet strategy is widely credited as the foundation of Jeju Air's growth. Since introducing the B737-800NG in 2008, the carrier has maintained a uniform fleet, which allows for greater efficiency in pilot training, maintenance and parts management.
That operating model has also increased scheduling flexibility and reduced maintenance costs, enabling Jeju Air to adjust routes in response to shifting market demand and accelerate expansion into short- and medium-haul international markets.
More recently, the airline has turned its attention to fleet modernization. It plans to transition from the B737-800NG to the next-generation B737-8, which offers better fuel efficiency, with the goal of strengthening both cost competitiveness and sustainability.
Jeju Air currently operates a fleet of 44 passenger aircraft. It has taken delivery of 12 B737-8 aircraft through purchases made from 2023 through last month, while also returning and selling older planes. The new deliveries are tied to improvements in fuel efficiency, maintenance operations and flight safety.
The airline's route strategy centers on short- and medium-haul markets including Japan, greater China and Southeast Asia. By tailoring its network to market conditions and travel demand, Jeju Air has also helped shape the trend toward shorter, more frequent trips.
On China routes, the carrier operates charter services alongside regular scheduled flights in line with visa-free policy changes. On Japan routes, Jeju Air has expanded beyond major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka on the Incheon corridor to include smaller cities like Shizuoka, Matsuyama, Hiroshima and Kobe, strengthening its competitiveness on Korea–Japan services.
Jeju Air currently operates 64 routes in total — seven domestic and 57 international spanning Japan, China, Southeast Asia and Oceania. As travel demand becomes increasingly segmented, the carrier is building a route portfolio connecting both major cities and smaller destinations to capture a wider range of customers.
"Over the past 20 years, we have achieved consistent growth by securing cost competitiveness and operational efficiency through our single-fleet model," a Jeju Air official said. "Going forward, we will continue to strengthen our foundation for sustainable growth by modernizing our fleet and operating routes efficiently, with a focus on safe operations and enhancing customer convenience and travel experience."
